Hi.

Welcome to The Whimsical Wife. Thanks for popping in to share my adventures in the kitchen, in my home and my workshop as I Cook, Create & Decorate.

Boy's Room Inspiration & Update

I thought I would write a quick update on how guest bedroom now J.D's new room is coming along. This room use to be a guest bedroom then it became my unofficial photography space and now it is going to be J.D's new room. He's getting moved out of the nursery to make way for baby #2. I am exactly 30 weeks today (will get another preggo post up soon) and I am feeling a little nervous now that things need to get finished! Time is a ticking!! These next 10 weeks are just going to fly and I am really not organised with having anything set up for the baby. Eek. Please tell me all second time mum's are like this.

Progress is going well with the built-in cupboards for J.D's new room as you can see below. That is what is holding the moving process up a bit. My awesome DIY hubby is building this so I can't complain. We are saving buckets by building this ourselves and not having to get someone in to build it for us. This was the only bedroom that did not have any built-in cupboards in the whole house. I am not sure why but it just seems that this is the case. Hubby has progressed further since this shot and has got some paint on the new walls. Things still be done is to install the shelving and hanging areas, paint and put the doors on and paint and put the skirting on around the edges.

I haven't done much else to the space as I am waiting for the construction process to finish before I start adding furniture and art to the walls. I have been gathering ideas of the kids of space I want to create in here. Initially I will probably bring in most of the same decor as what he already has in his nursery as I wasn't sure I wanted to start a whole new scheme straight off. It wouldn't be frugal to do that since he's only had most of the decor for 2 years. I was thinking of waiting until we transitioned out of the cot/toddler bed stage and into a proper bed that I would create a proper grown up little boy's room. However in the mean time I will make a few changes to it to take it out of the "baby" look and give it a bit of an older child feel.

I have been on pinterest gathering some ideas of what direction I want to go in with this room. I think I want to keep it bright and simple with touches of colour through interesting pieces placed throughout the room. This being through cute pieces of wall art, selected toys displayed and through the soft furnishings in cushions and quilt covers. I am really not one of those people that like bright primary colours - especially in regards to kids furnishings. I am thinking of creating my own piece of wall art using paint chips (or paint colour samples) your pick up from your local hardware store. I know this isn't anything new but I think this is a really cheap and easy way to add some colour into a room. I think I will stick to a simple geometric pattern in the colour scheme of the room. I love this piece created by Rachel at A Beautiful Mess.

I am also in love with this simple ABC poster from Hugo Loves Tiki! Gorgeous.

I have discovered that I am in love with the simplicity of Scandinavian design at the moment. It's simple colour palette and no fuss furniture layout has tickled my fancy when looking for inspiration for J.D's room. I have pulled out a few of my favourite room inspirations to show you below but you can check out my Boy Room pinterest board to see what else I have been pinning.

This table and chair set just made me SWOON! Simple yet effective.

I love this shelving unit and the way you can randomly display a collection of cute things. I showed hubby this is something I wanted for J.D's room. He probably groaned internally knowing he would most likely have to make it! One day honey, one day.

I so want to create a Tee Pee for J.D. Not sure if it will fit in his room but maybe one he can play with outside. This simple rustic and natural room is just beautiful.

I love the natural woods in the this room offset with the dark geometric pattern on the wall and in the rug.

I think I will be adding a few lighter wood pieces of furniture into J.D's new room instead of keeping all his pieces white like it is in his nursery at the moment. The wood seems to add some warmth into the room.
I will keep you posted on the progress of this room as I will say things will hopefully come together pretty quickly as we get closer to my due date.
