DIY Mother's Day Gift: Etched Wooden Utensils + Video
Hey, guys, I've got another great DIY Mother's Day gift idea just in time for the weekend. I know, I know I'm a bit late posting this one but trust me if you want these awesome etched wooden spoons you'll only need an hour or so to whip them up. A great project to do with the kids tomorrow! Also, if you want a bit more instruction scroll to the bottom of the post for a video tutorial I've done up for this project.
If you have a special someone that adores whipping up a storm in the kitchen, then this project will tickle their fancy. These unique and personalised etched wooden spoons would make the perfect addition to any master cooks kitchen. These spoons can be mastered in an afternoon with a little foresight and artistic flair. Choose your design, sketch it out, burn it in and voila you’re done.
I picked up my wood burning tool from eBay as my local Bunnings was out of stock but I've linked to the tool that I would recommend using from Bunnings. The wooden spoons I picked up for $7 from Kmart for a pack of 6 which is a total bargain and means you can go to town making heaps of different designs on each.
Materials:
- Woodburning Tool & Tips
- Wooden Spoons
- Lead Pencil
- Rubber
Step 1.
Using the lead pencil lightly sketch your chosen design onto the wooden spoon.
Step 2.
Choose the correct tip for your project and attach it to the wood burning tool. I stayed with the universal tip for my project. Plug it in and let it heat up for about 3-4 minutes. For safety purposes make sure the tool is placed on the enclosed stand while warming. Be warned this tool gets very very hot to take care using it!!
Step 3.
Use an old piece of wood as a work surface to burn your design onto the wooden spoon. It will protect any mishaps with the burning tool and provide a sturdy surface to work on. If it is your first time using the wood burning tool, I would recommend practicing on a scrap piece of wood before attempting your design on the spoon. I did this and am glad that I did as it helped me learn how much pressure to apply to get the desired effect I was after. It's a good idea to let the tip reheat for a couple of seconds after doing a few strokes. This will keep an even looking design and stop the tip going cool and losing the effect you are after.
Step 4.
Once you are confident in using the woodburning tool, start lightly burning your design into the wooden spoon. Make the second round of burnings add further effect to your design.
Step 5.
Let it cool and give the spoon a wipe over with a damp cloth to remove any burnt bits of wood.
Step 6.
Gather your beautifully etched wooden spoons together and wrap them up ready to present to your special someone.
