Back To School: Kids Closet Makeover For Under $50 + Video
I am baring my soul a little bit with you guys today and letting you see a dark and scary corner of my house. Well, not really dark nor scary but utterly chaotic and messy. I am crossing my fingers that we all have one of these cupboards in our homes that just gets away with us and before you know it looks like the cupboard below. I opened it one day and nearly got knocked out by a falling toy from the top shelf and that just about did me in. I knew it was time to overhaul my big boy's cupboard and get it organised. He starts prep this year and to begin his school year with a cupboard this chaotic wasn't sitting well with me. I wanted a space for him to be able to access his school clothes and bag and have it packed away tidily after the end of the day. I also wanted some extra space to store the toys that seem to want to knock me out all the time. My head would thank me for it.
Every time I put away his clothes or tried to access something at the bottom of his cupboard it just annoyed the heck out of me that it was all dumped on top of each other. I thought a quick tidy up on the other side of his cupboard which housed most of his clothes would also be a great idea. So frustration got the better of me and I managed to knock this project up in a day. A quick trip to Kmart (Oh how I love Kmart) for some organization pieces and a rummage through our wood offcuts and I was in business.
The first step of this project was to draw up a rough plan on paper or in my head of what I wanted to closet to look like. I initially thought about a cube storage unit in the base of the closet with storage baskets in it to be used as the epicentre for all his school stuff. My mum came over and I discussed it with her and she came up with the great idea of putting a shelf near the base of the closet and add some storage baskets underneath that shelf. That then put some more ideas in motion and when I went to Kmart to get what I needed I came across some hanging storage to add to the cupboard as well. My plan was set and now it was time to get it in motion.
The first step to revamping the closet was to add a shelf to the bottom of the closet. Thankfully we didn't need to buy any wood as we like to "hoard" excess pieces of the wood under our house for random projects like this. I had a leftover shelf that I used for creating this shelf in the closet. Hubby trimmed the wood down to the size we needed and used the excess pieces to create battens to be secured to the closet wall which the pine shelf would sit on.
We screwed the battens to the closet wall with plasterboard screws and made sure they were level and at the correct height. This was the only bit that I needed hubby for as I wasn't proficient in attaching things to the wall such as these. That's one thing I want to learn to do this year is to get a little bit better with the tools. Once the pine shelf was in place it was time to get the rest of the storage into place and get this closet looking spiffy.
To get the full project details make sure you check out my video below. I put this together as we did the project and when I put the whole closet together so you can see the process that we went through in creating this closet revamp.
